Almost immediately after Audi’s groundbreaking supercar, the R8, broke cover in 2007, there was rumour a soft-top version would soon follow. The rumours were true, and the car was unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. Kyosho, who produced the original R8 coupé in 1:18, will also be replicating the Spyder. And rightly so. The R8 Spyder is going to be the coolest convertible, if not the coolest supercar, of the year. Most convertibles, it’s fair to say, can often be an ill-conceived afterthought. But this is Audi, and this convertible is the finished article. The result is a truly beautiful car; some may argue more attractive than the R8 itself. The Spyder’s folding fabric roof, which is electrically driven, folds away into a compartment behind the bulkhead. When the roof is up, it complements the car’s somewhat bulgy rear end, making it look as if it was always meant to be that way. Noticeably, Audi decided to leave off the prominent sideblades that disfigure the body of the normal R8, in order to give the Spyder’s exterior a cleaner line. Audi’s engineers faced the usual brain teaser of having to stiffen the chassis, without compromising the car’s weight. They did this with aplomb. Despite strengthening several areas of the chassis, the Spyder weighs a mere 100 kilograms more than the original R8. The car is powered by Audi’s fearsome 5.2 litre V10, which produces 525bhp. One can only dream of what it would sound like when driving through a tunnel with the roof down. Surprisingly, the British weather hasn’t stopped Audi’s 2010 allocation of 200 cars from being sold well in advance. If you ordered one now, you would have to wait at least a year. You won’t have to wait at all for the silver replica, though, as it is in stock now!
