AUTOart originally announced that it was going to produce a 1:12 replica of the dramatic Suzuki Katana about five years ago, since when there had been little news, until it came into stock just as we went to press. It is perhaps only the announcement by Japanese model-maker, WIT’S, that they are producing the Katana that has caused AUTOart to push their model into production.
Launched in 1982, the Katana was a bold, stylish and imaginative motorcycle. Katana was a Japanese word for a Samurai’s ceremonial sword. It fitted Suzuki’s sharp new blade perfectly, with its pointed nose, tiny screen, clip-on handlebars and swooping seat.
But the Katana was much more than a pretty face. It was also a superb, high performance machine. Its 1075cc air-cooled engine from the GSX1100 was incredibly reliable and offered a phenomenally broad spread of power. Reworked for the Katana, the GSX engine produced 111bhp.
The Katana looked fast on its side-stand but the reality was that it was a truly fast bike, capable of a top speed in the region of 140mph. Although the bike was heavy at slow speeds, this was a machine that was designed for high speed riding, and once on the move, it handled and performed admirably.
Today, an original Katana is a highly sought after and collectible machine. It is, in every way, a suitable subject for collectors of classic 1:12 replica motorcycles.
The AUTOart 1:12 replica
AUTOart is one of the most prestigious brands in the diecast field, responsible for some of the most detailed and interesting replicas that have ever been created. The company is not so well-known for its two-wheeled subjects, but their recent Norton Commando replica has shown collectors that it has no problem creating motorbikes of collectible quality.
The Katana is just as impressive, particularly with the chain that moves around with the rear wheel! As ever, AUTOart’s restocks can take as long to come through as for the original model in the first place, so don’t put off buying one for too long!
