One of the very first classic bikes that Minichamps produced was the BSA Gold Star. It sold well but even though on the box the model was called aDBD34, any knowledgeable enthusiast would have immediately recognised that it was not a Clubman at all!
So, pretty soon after the original model was released we went to visit a chap up near Gatwick who specialises in building and restoring Clubmans. We took notes, photographed one of his bikes from every conceivable angle and sent all the details to Minichamps. But that was some five years ago and, in truth, we had virtually given up hope that this bike would actually ever get made. And then, earlier this year, we saw a highly finished pre-production sample at the Nuremberg Toy Fair. Which means we should see the bike this year. We could even see it quite soon.
The DBD34 Clubman
The most famous model in the Gold Star line was introduced in 1956. Overseen by BSA’s famous chief designer, Bert Hopwood, it was basically a thinly disguised road racer.
Modifications over the standard Gold Star included a steeper steering geometry, a new swing arm and twin shock rear suspension, a bigger front brake, an ultra close-ratio gearbox, a large finned cylinder barrel and a big Amal 11/2” GP carburettor with an open intake. With its clip-on bars, chrome sided gas tank, rear-set foot-pegs, raised headlamp and megaphone exhausts, it certainly looked the part.
And it performed too, putting out a healthy 42-43 bhp at 7,000 rpm, sufficient for a genuine 110mph right out of the box. The Goldie was the original hooligan bike; loud and fast, it became the bike of choice for the newly evolved café racing generation.
The 1:12 replica
There’s no doubt about it. When Minichamps models an accurate real bike, they can produce a superb and highly detailed and authentic replica. The problem is that, just occasionally, the donor bikes used by the company are not as original as they purport to be. Which is why we work so hard to keep the company supplied with authentic, unmolested original bikes.
Given that this new model is based on one of our bikes, we are pretty confident that it’s going to be a superb model. Don’t, by the way, take too much notice of the pre-production sample shown here. It’s still some way from being finished. Our fingers are crossed for a 2009 release.
