While doing the rounds at this year’s Nuremberg Toy Fair we came across a new brand called TrueScale Miniatures. What caught our eye was that its first subject would be the Porsche 935 K3.
And having just taken our first delivery of cars, we have to say that we are very impressed. Two of the three cars have now been released. The first version released is the colourful Apple Computers sponsored example of Bobby Rahal, Bob Garretson and Allan Moffat, from the 1980 Le Mans 24 Hours. Unfortunately, the trio failed to finish, but this is definitely one of those diecast replicas where you are paying for the livery rather than the result!
The multi-coloured paintwork has been replicated beautifully, while the engine cover and bonnet can both be removed. This reveals a very impressive level of engine and mechanical detail that is not far short of what one used to see on an Exoto replica. But at £129.99, these replicas represent pretty reasonable value for money.
The second subject is the Goji car, which is also from Le Mans 1980. This was driven by Tetsu Ikuzawa, Rolf Stommelen and Axel Plankenhorn, but unfortunately it also failed to finish, after qualifying an impressive third.
Finally, there will be the Jagermeister car, which was shared by Axel Plankenhorn, John Fitzpatrick and Rolf Stommelen during the 1980 DRM, with Fitzpatrick scoring two victories at Zolder and Hockenheim.
One word of warning; all three replicas are/will be limited editions, and if the market takes to them suddenly, as can be the case when a new diecast manufacturer makes a good first impression, they will be sold out in an instant!
