Some of the most exciting replicas that we have seen released in the last few weeks (indeed, this year), are AUTOart’s 1:18 DTM Mercedes C-Classes.

Yes, AUTOart takes an age releasing new subjects, even by the slow standards of the diecast industry! Yes, AUTOart seems to inflict a new set of price rises with every new shipment that arrives in the country. Yes, getting blood out of a stone is easier than trying to get AUTOart to commit to anything. But you can’t deny that AUTOart makes some fantastic models!

The Mika Hakkinen car from the 2007 season looks absolutely fantastic in its carbon fibre effect livery. This is also a very significant car as it was the Finn’s last before he retired from racing at the end of the season.

Then there is Bernd Schneider’s example, also from 2007, where the German took victory in the British round at Brands Hatch. The paint job on this model has been another triumph for AUTOart, with the engine’s mechanicals ‘ghosted’ underneath the shiny silver livery.

Finally, there is Bruno Spengler’s ‘Mercedes-Benz Bank’ car from 2008, which confused us slightly when it was released, as it was originally supposed to be from 2007 as well. See what we mean about AUTOart information?

These are all sealed bodyshell replicas, which seems to be becoming the standard for AUTOart race cars these days. The brand’s prices finally seem to have settled down, however, with £79.99 the standard price for racing subjects that come without opening parts. And although that seems quite dear, it should be remembered that Mattel’s new Elite cars are coming through at £74.99. A £5 premium over a Hot Wheels replica actually makes an AUTOart seem like remarkably good value, given the undeniable difference in quality!
