Audi Sport Quattro Rally - 1984 San Remo Rally - #5 W.Rohrl 1:18

Audi Sport Quattro Rally - 1984 San Remo Rally - #5 W.Rohrl 1:18

AUTOart have released their two 1:18 Audi Sport Quattro replicas. There is Stig Blomqvist’s car from the 1985 Monte Carlo Rally (AA88311) and Walter Rohrl’s car from San Remo in ‘84. Audi’s four wheel drive rally contender was introduced in 1980, but it took until 1984 for the concept to become truly convincing. The original Quattro was heavy, didn’t handle particularly well, and often suffered from mechanical unreliability. During the 1983 season, Lancia’s lightweight, rear wheel drive 037 was more than capable of giving the Audi a run for its money. Hannu Mikkola was champion for the Ingolstadt marque that year, but Lancia won the constructors’ championship. In 1984, Audi finally won both titles with the Sport Quattro. The chassis was shortened by 330mm as well as being 57mm wider, in order to make the car lighter and more agile. They also improved the weight balance by moving the batteries, oil coolers and radiators to the rear of the car. Finally the Quattro got a more powerful engine and an advanced six-speed transmission. Audi ran away with the 1984 championship. The season began with a sensational 1-2-3 victory on the Monte, with Rohrl the eventual winner after duelling with team mates Blomqvist and Mikkola. Blomqvist eventually took the title, winning five rallies in total. However, the Quattro began to encounter new, more advanced competitors. Peugeot introduced the radical mid-engined T16, and despite further modifications to the car, Audi could never recapture the dominance of 1984. The AUTOart 1:18 Audi Sport Quattro is an absolute stunner! Of course, you can open the doors, bonnet and boot. In the boot, you will find a spare wheel along with the oil cooler and battery. But what we are most impressed with is the detail in the cockpit. There’s a plethora of buttons, knobs, switches and dials. AUTOart has even recreated the radio microphone that is attached to the co-driver’s seat. If you collect rally cars this subject is, quite simply, a must have.
