SMTS has released a 1:43 replica of Jim Clark's Lotus 48 from the tragic 1968 Formula 2 race at Hockenheim. This is the first time that this car has ever been replicated, and Clive Chapman (Colin's son) of Classic Team Lotus has insisted that his royalties from the sales of this model be donated to the Jim Clark Memorial Fund.

Extract from our Diecast Monthly Magazine BR65 - March 2009

Although 2008 will be remembered for Lewis Hamilton’s first World Championship and the fiftieth anniversary of Britain’s first ever world title, courtesy of Mike Hawthorn, it also marked another very significant milestone.

Which, of course, was the fortieth anniversary of the death of the great Jim Clark, one of the most naturally gifted drivers ever to get behind the wheel of a racing car. In Grand Prix racing, Clark only finished second once. In other words, if his often fragile Lotus didn’t let him down, there was normally no stopping him.

But Clark did not just excel in Formula One. Along with his two world titles, he also won the British Saloon Car Championship in 1964 and the Indianapolis 500 in 1965. He was also a very capable rally driver as well.

In previous catalogues, you may have read about the chaps at Scale Model Technical Services. Most of the staff there were growing up in the 1960s, so they are, unsurprisingly, huge Jim Clark fans. Which is why they are manufacturing so many of their hero’s racing cars. The latest one to be released is Jim Clark’s last ever racing car; his Formula 2 Lotus 48 from that fateful day at Hockenheim on 7th April 1968.

As with Ayrton Senna’s death some 26 years later, the entire motorsport community was stunned, with many theories put forward as to how the Scot’s Lotus could have speared off the circuit: puncture, steering failure, or even suspension failure.

Jim Clark’s last ever car has never been replicated before, and Clive Chapman (Colin’s son) of Classic Team Lotus has insisted that his royalties from the sales of the model be donated to the Jim Clark Memorial Fund. As you would expect, it measures up to the quality and attention to detail that characterises all SMTS’s hand built white metal models.
