AUTOart may have released its rather fine 1:18 replica of the Bugatti Veyron some time ago, but it is Minichamps who will be producing the convertible Grand Sport version. The original Veyron was an engineering feat of epic proportions. To keep that kind of horsepower under control in a road car demanded the use of the most exotic materials available and the employment of systems and technologies that had never before proved necessary. But to create a convertible version without dynamic compromise was even more challenging. To maintain rigidity, the Bugatti’s body consists of a carbon fibre monocoque suspended from an aluminium frame in the front and a carbon fibre and stainless steel frame at the rear. Other minor changes to the areas like the windshield were required, but in most respects the Veyron Grand Sport gives little, if anything, away to the coupé. The car comes with two roofs, one of which is a temporary get you home roof that is only good for 130kph. The main roof section, however, does not compromise the car¹s top speed of 406kph, although in full open configuration the car will only reach a rather paltry 370kph! The very first Grand Sport was sold at the 2008 Gooding and Company Pebble Beach auction. It sold for $2.9m, of which $900,000 went to charity. At nearly £140, the Minichamps Bugatti is a showcase model, designed to demonstrate that the company can produce replicas to the very highest standard.
